What and how to improve Search Engine Optimization SEO

Learn what search enginge optimization SEO is and how to improve your own blogs or websites SEO.
Thanks to Serpstat for the beautiful visual representation.
At the start of my blogging journey I had no idea what Search Engine Optimization was. But, over the years I have seen it be a huge factor whilst blogging. It's something worth noticing, being aware of and taking the appropriate actions when required.

In this post, I'll explain what Search Engine Optimization is and different ways you can improve your blog or website.

What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) refers to how high your website will rank in search engines and how visible it will be. There are many ways to improve the SEO and hopefully this post will help!

Why should I care about SEO?

Well, to simply put it... the higher the visibility of your blog (and posts), the more people will visit (and see) it.
In order to be more visible and get more traffic, you need to follow rules and learn a little about SEO. SEO is a large topic and there's no better place to start, other than the basics.

How to improve my blog or website

Permalink (URL): Make your permalink (or URL) appropriate and easy to read. The shorter the link, generally the better it is. Use a hyphen ( - ) in your URL.

Meta descriptions: Make sure you fill a meta description as best as you can because it helps with the ranking.

Search description of a post: When writing a post, make sure you have a search description. This just tells everyone what your post is about and it’s easier to read.

Anchor text: Anchor text is a clickable text in a hyperlink. I have previously said this numerous amounts of time, but, instead of writing “click this” or “here”, word it accordingly to where you are linking.

Device friendly: In a world where there are so many different types of technology that we can use in order to get online, it’s crucial to serve every device’s needs. So, make sure you have a ‘responsive’ website because you could get penalised if you don’t.

Post regularly: Regular uploads on your blog means search engines will rank your blog as more relevant.

Don’t overuse keywords: Don’t misuse keywords and use them sensibly.

Broken links: Check your website’s broken link. There may be so many dead links so make sure your blog doesn’t have many (or even any) of them.

Use a sitemap: A sitemap is basically a list of your web pages and you tell search engines about the content of your site. Many crawlers are able to discover your site if it’s linked properly anyway. But, a sitemap can increase the effectiveness of your site.

There are a few things to do when it comes to your images to make sure your page ranks high as possible. They are:

Size: Yes, good quality images are great but large sizes will make your page load slower. Therefore, the lower the size, the better. Especially, if you leave your pictures on “automatic” sizing then it’ll take longer to load.

Name: The name of your images are crucial. Instead of having ‘DSC-1232’, have something appropriate like ‘SEO_guide’.

Use underscores (_): When naming your images, use “_” as it’s easier to read.

Alt text: After you have upload your picture added it to your blog post, make sure you use the ‘alt text’. This is the description that will be visible to search engines. Describe the image accordingly to your post in this section.

Keywords: Use keywords on your images if it’s appropriate.

Other ways include:

Guest posts: Guest posting on other blogs will help others find your blog, as well as reaching out to a wide audience, those blogs who score highly on SEO will link back to your blog. This basically means, you have a trusty person who has referred to you.

Share: The more people that share your post, the better.

Easy to use: Make sure your blog is easy to navigate through and is eye-catching. This will help new readers to become a permanent reader.

Link social media: Make sure all of your social media have a link back to your blog.

That's all for now! I hope this post helped and if it did, make sure you share it please!

  1. Even though I touched on SEO a little in uni, I've definitely learned so much more since blogging - although my frequency has completely dropped to non-existent over the last couple of months while I settle into a new job I'm so motivated to pick up where I left off! There's so much useful tips in this post!
