The best advice on dealing with your emotions before starting university


Nervous? Excited? Anxious? Weird butterflies? Happy? Sad? Fearful? Any other mixed feelings? You will feel many emotions before starting university. You need to read this post if you're experiencing any emotion(s) before starting university.

I guarantee, if not all, then the majority of freshers will be feeling the same. All new students starting with you are feeling the same way, so it's OK!

Some freshers will be older and some younger, but the main thing you all have in common is that you are all embarking on a new journey together. 
Mature students may fear that they are older, more mature, and may not fit in. They won't have the same social life or worry about moving away from home like most students coming from colleges/sixth forms. Thoughts such as "younger students may not talk to me" or "I'll be the odd one out", I say these thoughts are normal.
Some younger students may wonder about how to make new friends, how they are moving away from home, fear of not being accepted by others, the workload, doubting yourself, the thoughts about university being hard. BUT I want to say that these thoughts are totally valid. 
If you're a student joining university or even returning to university, it does not get easier. Starting each term will be daunting. But it's OKAY. Trust me, you will be fine. 

All new university students will be going through mixed feelings and thoughts but remind yourself as to why you wanted to go to university, what you want to achieve by the end, and what you want to do now. 
It’s totally normal to have mixed feelings, but once you start, then you will be fine. You will make new friends, you will settle down properly, and it will be okay. We cannot control yesterday, and we cannot control tomorrow, but we can control today; make the most of today and don’t worry about yesterday and figure out tomorrow when it comes. 
You will settle down, it's just going to take time. A year from now, you'll look back and wonder why you were worrying so much. You may look back and not even remember the worry.

You need a positive mindset when starting university. NEVER EVER doubt your ability to do something because if you were not capable of doing something then, you wouldn’t have got this far. My advice is that feelings are totally normal and okay, just don’t let your feelings get the better of you and DO NOT stress. 

Remember: all students around you are in the same boat. Feeling the same way. Having the same questions or similar thoughts as you. Don't be afraid of making a conversation with someone. Most people want to make friends, but just don't know how to. So, don't be afraid to start a conversation. Don't be scared of rejection as well. Everyone at university is lovely, and no one is going to be horrible to you. 

Just enjoy the journey. Three/four years from now, you'll be starting a new journey, and you won't even remember this moment.
